The SDU Mechatronics and Centre for Industrial Mechanics, part of the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, is seeking a highly motivated researcher for a postdoc position in robust data-driven/learning-based control for eco-friendly cooling/heating systems. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The application deadline is 1 June 2024 at 11.59 PM/23.59 (CET/CEST)
Position Description
The primary objective of this position is to tackle the inherent challenges of traditional control methodologies by proposing innovative approaches that utilize model-free robust learning-based control for low-carbon vapour-compression cooling/heating systems relying on natural refrigerants. Classical model-based approaches often encounter difficulties due to reliance on accurate system models and precise predictions of uncertain factors, making practical implementation challenging. Recent improvements in learning-based structures and the data availability have made the application of data-driven (control and fault detection) approaches promising for intricated systems including energy conversion systems.
Workplace description
The Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IME) covers innovation, research, and education spanning from fundamentals to applications of engineering science. All our courses are taught in English reflecting the fact that more than half our students and staff are internationals. The Cooling and Heating Research Group is located at SDU's beautiful campus in Sønderborg, in the inspiring building of Alsion, which is a centre for science, culture and learning in the heart of Sønderborg and perched on the strait of water separating the island of Als from the mainland. The university has very close relations to the industry in Sønderborg, Southern Denmark and Northern Germany, among others. A significant fraction of the projects in the centre are conducted in close cooperation with the industry, which count world leading companies in crucial fields, such as e-mobility and energy efficiency.
Requirements
The successful candidate will possess the flexibility to align their research objectives and collaborate effectively towards developing solutions. She/he should demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills, enabling them to effectively persuade and motivate their colleagues, including a team of PhD and MSc researchers, towards achieving tangible results. Additionally, she/he should enjoy engaging with engineers and experts from diverse academic and industrial backgrounds for mutual learning opportunities.
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Cooling and Heating Research Group, specializing in Data-Driven Control Systems. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise at least in two of the following fields:
- Reinforcement learning and safe learning-based control.
- Model identification/estimation using machine learning algorithms,
- Fault detection and fault tolerant control.
- Robust Optimal Control,
- MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python programming.
The ideal candidate should have extensive experience with:
- Background in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion Systems,
Candidates can be asked to contribute to teaching activities and engage in funding applications to support ongoing research initiatives.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines. A strong publication record in reputable scientific or engineering journals is essential, demonstrating the ability to produce impactful research.
